The grain would first be sent down the chutes on the stone floor into the brushing machine (see below) on the ground floor. This cleaning machine was used to remove dust, grit and any surface 'smut' from the grain.

The machine has an inclined cylinder lined with a course mesh. As the grain travels through it is brushed against the mesh which dislodges any smut from the it's surface.

The cleaned grain would then be hoisted up to the top of the mill and poured into the hopper of Stones no.1, underneath these stones the flour would pass down the chute into a dresser (see below), which contained three sieve layers. The sieves could be replaced depending on which grade of flour was required.
